Say Yes

Do you ever wish you could simply say YES to the good things in life?

Depression and anxiety come with so many NO's. It’s a word we get used to if we carry around the baggage of depression and anxiety, a weight we grow accustomed to. NO becomes almost second nature.

Do you want to go to lunch or go for a walk? - No

Are you interested in advancing your career? - No.

Is there anything that brings you joy? - No.

NO brings us no change, no growth, no healing. But NO is also comfortable. It keeps potential pain and suffering at a distance, giving us the illusion of safety. The only way to find out if our inner world can ever improve is to take one small step at a time, one YES to trying something new.

Are you open to the possibility that things might change for you one day? - Yes.

Is there anything in your life that is worth the effort to keep trying? - Yes.

Are you willing to learn about some new treatments that might a missing piece in your mental health journey? - Yes.

I know hope is a scary thing. Hope is the reason depression demands we say NO. Because that new medication, that walk, that new treatment… it might not work. And if it doesn’t, our depression believes it will drive us further down in the pit of despair or even more numb. At some point in the wrestle with our monsters, we have to RISK HOPE. We have to dare to say YES to things. Your depression may have convinced you that you’re incapable of trying - but it’s wrong. It’s just trying to protect you from more pain.

The key that will open the cage of fear is “YES”. Say yes to something new. If it’s not the right thing, it’s a stepping stone to the right thing. Then, you can move forward and say yes to something else. Embracing the fear of hope is the only path forward. It’s the only path to freedom. Say YES to hope.
